From Viehhofen you can embark on many exciting excursions as well as visit points of interest. Lovers of nature and adventure will be thrilled with what is on offer. We've compiled a list of some of the best excursions for you.

Tip: This is just a small excerpt from the wide range of sights and attractions. At the Viehhofen Tourist Office you will find brochures for the majority of excursion destinations, both in and surrounding Viehhofen. We will be happy to provide you with further information!

Großglockner High Alpine Road

High mountains and the Grossglockner – what was once exclusive to skilled alpinists has been transformed into an adventure for all ages that is still incredibly fascinating thanks to the construction of the Grossglockner High Alpine Road. A lot has changed ever since its opening in 1935. The road has become wider, safer and more comfortable. Exhibitions and museums, huts and mountain inns, visitors’ centres and information points are dedicated to the multifaceted mountain world with its stunning nature and biota at the heart of the High Tauern National Park. The mountain road blends in seamlessly with the scenery, makes for one-of-a-kind mountain experiences and has been ensuring driving fun beyond compare on 48 km for over 80 years.

Wildlife and Leisure park Ferleiten

Right next to the Grossglocknerstraße before the toll station there are over 200 animals indigenous to the alps on around 15 hectares of land. A walk around the park takes around one hour. The paths are all suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs.

Enjoy fun and games on 20,000m² surrounded by breathtaking alpine scenery.  Refreshments are served at our restaurant and at the Zwergenschenke (dwarf bar).  Parents can watch their children from the comfort of the guesthouse patio.

It is the highest point comfortably accessible for everyone in the county of Salzburg and a real shining star among the countless alpine options. From its position at the edge of the "Hohe Tauern National Park" the summit complex offers stunning insights into - and views of - the mystical Kitzsteinhorn and the Hohe Tauern mountains.

Hohenwerfen Fortress

Visitors experience a high-altitude encounter with the past at Hohenwerfen Fortress, a castle dating back over 900 years. Salt Mine Hallein

Salt used to be described as “White Gold” and it is true that the deposits created millions of years ago in the Dürrnberg, near Hallein have provided the region Salzburg with its treasure chamber. More than 2500 years ago, the Celts were already mining this precious mountain resource, as is evident from the traces they left behind. 

In Hallein, the oldest mine in the world open to visitors, everyone from the age of four up can take part in a treasure hunt – and follow the mysterious, ancient miners’ tunnels for many kilometres into the mystical mountain.

Caves and Gorges

On hot summer days, caves and gorges are especially appealing. There are several caves and gorges in the neighbouring area of Viehhofen including the Sigmund-Thun-Klamm in Kaprun, the Kitzlochklamm in Taxenbach, the Vorderkaserklamm, Seisenbergklamm and Lamprechtshöhle near Weißbach, the Liechtensteinklamm in St. Johann i. Pongau and the Erlebnisnishöhle "Entrische Kirche" in Dorfgastein.

Adventure Gerlos Alpine Road

Located in the far west of the Pinzgau, part of the province of Salzburg, the mountain road is a great way to explore the alpine landscape between Krimml and the Tyrolean Zillertal. The most beautiful time to experience the alpine road is between May and late October.
