Climbing, bouldering and via ferrata

In- and outdoor climbing fun in the surrounding of Viehhofen

One of the main advantages of climbing, is that you can climb both in and outdoors. In good weather, you will find climbing and via ferrata routes in the mountains, promising an unforgettable outdoor experience. In bad weather, both for beginners and training purposes, climbing and bouldering are an attractive alternative. Modern climbing halls can be found not too far away, such as the hall in Saalfelden.

Technic training

Climbing halls are ideal for beginners, as well as a place where more advanced climbers can fine tune their skills and the halls are naturally ideal in bad weather conditions. In the surroundings of Viehhofen there are several top modern climbing halls, such as the "Felsenfest" Saalfelden climbing hall, the Leogang PGA, the Zell am See climbing centre (incl. indoor high ropes course), or the Kaprun indoor climbing hall which is alongside the outdoor climbing area.

For those who would prefer to stay a little closer to the ground, but would like to try their hand at climbing, will find an interesting alternative with the sport of bouldering.  Bouldering is possible both outdoors as well as indoors. There are special bouldering halls, for example, in Zell am See or Uttendorf (where you will also find a bouldering area at the lake). All these locations can be reached easily from Viehhofen.

via ferrata

If you would like to combine mountaineering with climbing, then you will love the via ferrata around Viehhofen, where you will find some of the most challenging and beautiful routes in Salzburger Land, including the Kristallklettersteig in the Weißsee glacier world or the Kitz Klettersteig in the Taxenbacher Kitzlochklamm. For beginners, the Klettersteig Wald / Königsleiten or the Klettersteig at the Mooserboden in Kaprun are recommended.

outdoor climbing

Outdoor climbing is of course one of the main attractions. There are many mountains in the Hohe Tauern National Park (including the Großglockner), which offer ideal conditions for outdoor climbing. The various types of rock face as well as the fantastic backdrop of mountains reaching over 3,000 metres altitude, contribute to the Hohe Tauern being of the most exciting climbing areas in the Alps.
