What is Anklöckeln?

Anklöckeln is an ancient tradition in which the "Anklöckler" (carolers) go from house to house in Salzburg regions before Christmas. The term Klöckln comes from the old word for "knocking," and so the Anklöckler knock on doors and ask for entry. They sing songs about the search for shelter and recite poems.

Dressed as Joseph, Mary, and the shepherds, the Anklöckler spread Christmas joy and, through their loud knocking, are believed to drive away evil and bless the house for the coming year.

Homeowners who welcome the Anklöckler with traditional treats such as Kletzenbrot (fruit bread) or other goodies are thought to bring good luck and prosperity for the year ahead. What is now a lovingly maintained tradition was once vital for many farmhands and needy families, as the gifts helped them survive the winter months.

Join us and let this heartwarming tradition enchant you – an unforgettable experience that makes Christmas in Viehhofen even more special!
